Use Technorati to your advantage

Chances are that if you follow the blogosphere at all these days you have probably heard of Technorati. The folks over at Technorati call themselves the authority for whats happening on the real-time web. To make a long story short, Technorati is a blog search engine and a fairly cool one at that.
I’ve had a Technorati account for almost a year now but must admit that I really didn’t use it to my advantage until just recently. Back in September Technorati added several new services, one of them being Blog Finder, and it was around this time that I started to see a increase in the amount of traffic that I was getting from Technorati. I also noticed that the blog or two that I had claimed on Technorati got significantly more traffic than those that had not been claimed. The weird thing was that the blogs that I claimed were updated rarely compared to the ones that weren’t, yet, they still got more traffic from Technorati.
During the holidays I had time to really take a look at and analyze server stats from all of my blogs. What I noticed was that I was getting constant daily traffic on my claimed blogs from the same Technorati URL consistently as compared to less frequent visits from different deep urls on my unclaimed blogs that had many more posts over the same time periods.
What I finally figured out was that my claimed blogs ranked high in authority for a particular tag that bloggers searched for frequently when using Blog Finder to search for blogs. When you claim a blog you have the ability to enter in Tags associated with your blog that someone looking for a blog on a particular subject may use to actually find your blog. Anytime someone links to your blog, your blog moves up the list in authority for tags you associate with your blog. Another benefit is the fact that many of the people searching for blogs on Technorati are themselves bloggers who tend to link to blogs that interest them.
Although click thru rates aren’t quite as high as from the traditional search engines, they are not that bad, and I would be willing to bet that the number of inbound links that you receive on related sites from bloggers that find your site via Technorati is significantly higher than from those that come to your site from a traditional search engine.

Nice write-up of Technorati - I presume that the vast majority of us don’t utilize all that’s available to us on Technoratri - maybe a “how to” eBook is in order … Hmmm

I would be interested in learning more about Technorati. I started using their search engine recently but can’t really find anything cool to put on my site to increase traffic.

Chaaban,
I really do get traffic from Technorati. In fact, I’ve really started using tags heavily on a couple of new blogs that I just started this year and Technorati is responsible for dozens of vistors a day on when I only get a couple of hundred total visitors.

A month and a half later I am now getting hundreds of visitors per day from technorati in total. I have even had a few days where I have had over 1000 Technorati visitors.
