The Link Leak Virus
I stumbled across the Link Leak Virus today. Is it an incredibly generous display of link altruism or an ingeniously clever link bait? I think it might be both.
Mike Sigers from Simplenomics has a new spin on blogtipping and it is is called the link leak. He describes it as “the complete and utter abandon of worry about a link and all its mighty power leaving your blog“. The jist is that you link to other people without worrying about getting recipes links or worrying about your outgoing visitors never coming back.
Mike has since started the Link Leak Virus which is an attempt to track all the link love going on in the blogosphere with the anchor text Link Leak Virus. I don’t know if Mike intended for it to be, however, the Link Leak Virus just might turn out to be one of the biggest link baits that we’ve seen in a while.

I’m glad you’ve picked up on this viral. I like it when people acknowledge me for coming up with the term “blogtipping,” but I love it when they actually do some blogtipping. Mike really came up with the link leak idea first and I came up with my idea without knowing about his. They’re similar ideas. Blogtipping just involves saying something nice (my tradition is three things) about another blogger and then offering a simple item of feedback or constructive criticism. Now we’ve played off of each other and gotten others interested in changing the way they blog a little, being more generous to link out to other bloggers.

I’m not certain I’m smart enough to have thought this out ahead of time, so I’ll just say if I had not seen my friend Chris Pearson of Pearsonified.com attempt to track his Indie Virus, I wouldn’t have though about using a tracking mechanism like anchor text to attempt to track mine.
I’m a PR6, probably not gonna go any higher and links in my tags are never gonna get me to the top, so I’m not as big a candidate for link baiting ( I had to look that up ) as some might be.
I’ll take all the links I can get, but it was out of sheer frustration that I started this, kinda by accident.
You can go back and read the posts in order and see the frustration and that I’m way too simple to be smart !
Thanks for noticing us and like Easton said, whether you link us or not, link to somebody and it will help everybody.
You can’t have too many friends.
