Do forum signatures really drive traffic to your blog?

One method of driving traffic to your blog that I have heard many, many times is to add a signature with a link to your blog in it that gets displayed on every post you create. It makes sense that if you create a post with a link back to you someone is bound to click it, eventually. I have a feeling, however, that not all signatures are created equal so I have decided to run a little test using my signature and Google Analytics to track it.

I see a lot of forum members that just use the URL to their blog as their signature. I think that this is the worst way to do it because, unless you have a very descriptive URL, it doesn’t tell potential visitors anything about your site. I think that using keywords that people may actually search for on search engines is far more effective. The key here is to use keywords in a phrase that will get you “maximum clickage.” A side benefit is that you should eventually get a higher ranking on search engines for the keywords in signature.

For my test I decided to use the Google Analytics URL builder to track my signature because it will automatically tell the difference of when someone clicks on my signature as compared to some other link back to my blog from the same domain. It also makes it really easy to run reports on as well.

Be sure to check back to see how the test is going.

[...] The other day I started a little experiment to see if forum signatures really drive traffic to your blog. At the time, I didn’t really have good copywriting techniques in mind, in fact, using keywords instead of your URL was about all the thought that I had given to the matter. That, however, was before I really started to notice how incredibly bad most peoples signatures are. [...]
