Before you can start to blog you have to know what you are going to blog about. You need to decide what your topic or your blog niche is going to be. Before you decide on your blog niche, however, there are three things you should think about in determining the profitability of the your blog niche.
You want to make sure that the blog niche that you choose to write about will be able to generate revenue so the three things that you should know when picking a blog niche:
- How many people search for you blog niche keywords and related keywords? — You wouldn’t want to pick a niche that only twelve people a month search for.
- How much are your keywords worth? — If keywords related to your niche are only worth a few cents per click it will take a lot of visitors and a lot of clicks for your blog to be profitable. I’ve seen blogs that get 1/20th the traffic of larger sites generate significantly more revenue just because the blog niche keywords were profitable.
- How much competition do you have? — How many other blogs are there about your niche?
There are a couple of free tools that you can use to help determine the profitability of your blog niche. The first one you should use is the Pixelfast Overture Keywords and Bid Amounts Tool. This nifty utility alows you to knock out two birds with one stone. Enter in your blog niche keyword, click go, and wait for the actual adds and bid amounts that could appear on your blog with content targeted for that particular keyword. Additionally, the number of times that you keyword was searched for the previous month shows up in the right fram window.
The second tool you should use is NicheBot. This utility allows you to enter in your keyword and find out statistics about the number of sites targeting the same keywords.
If you know these three things about your blog niche you should be able to gage it’s profitability before you spend months blogging about something that might be cool, but not profitable.
